Removing Side-Buds
When the Peonies are nearly ready to be harvested, and the main bud is developing, the side buds can be removed. This ensures a bigger flower, because side-buds use nutrition of the roots.
Not only will the main-flower end up bigger but it also will be blooming earlier, because all nutrition will be directed to the main bud. The side-buds are usually removed manually at a length of 2 to 3 cm. This is a very time-consuming task. The number of buds differs from variety to variety.
It’s important that – when removing the side-buds – the surface of the wound is kept to a minimum, because bacteria can easily enter wounds. It is important to keep that risk as low as possible.
