Peony Northwind Maiden

Peony Northwind Maiden is an early salmon double pink Peony Herbaceous Hybrid. Large clear pink double flowers carried on large plants with broad leaves. This plant’s parentage is unknown due to the loss of Bill Seidl’s locator/data book in the early 2000’s. Grown from seed in the late 70’s and located along a back lot line for nearly 30 years before it was divided and brought to Solaris Farms, Northwind Maiden has been a standout since. This plant is likely a sib to the popular Manitowoc Maiden, but is quite distinct. Distributed widely in Europe under seedling number #Seidl H-1. The form is a loose double (petals not densely packed) with broad guard petals and smaller notched and feathered interior segments. Flowers open a clear deep pink and then fade irregularly producing a visual bonanza. Typically the reproductive structures are not visible, but fully intact red stigmas and light yellow filaments are often produced. Carpels are green. Disc is obscure. Flowers are very rounded overall and carried on sturdy stems which lean outward slightly, but do not touch the ground. Average height 28 inch / 71 cm. Plants are fast growing and produce a canopy of wide hybrid foliage. One flower per stem. Excellent bud covers prevent damage during early wet season conditions. Fertile pollen and sets seed on complete flowers. Plants in Northeast Wisconsin are often subjected to high winds, often from the north, due to our proximity to Lake Michigan. This ‘maiden’ has certainly seen her fair share of these winds over the years. Parentage: Unknown (likely from Quad hybrids containing P. macrophylla). Seidl / Bremer, Solaris, 2021, USA).
